How many people have ever lived?
Demographers at the Population Reference Bureau estimate that about 117 billion humans have been born since Homo sapiens first appeared around 190,000 years ago. For most of that time the population was tiny — only a few million people — and life was short, so it took tens of thousands of years to reach the first few billion births. Today about 130–140 million babies are born every year, which means the running total grows by more than a billion every eight years.
How the number is worked out
The calculation starts from the widely quoted estimate of about 117 billion births up to 2022. For each year between your birthday and 2022, we add or subtract the number of babies born worldwide that year, using United Nations estimates (roughly 92 million in 1950, peaking around 140 million in the early 2010s). Within your birth year, we move forward day by day. The tool also shows how many people were alive in your birth year, using the same data as our world population by year table.
