Live Death Counter: How Many People Died Today
How many people have died in the world today? This live death counter estimates deaths today, deaths this year and deaths since you opened this page — for the whole world or any of 72 countries.
How many people die each day?
Around 161,568 people die every day worldwide — about 6,732 every hour, 112 every minute and almost two every second. Over a year that is roughly 59.0 million deaths. At the same time about 382,752 babies are born each day, so births still outnumber deaths by more than two to one.
| Period | Deaths (world) |
|---|---|
| Per second | 1.87 |
| Per minute | 112 |
| Per hour | 6,732 |
| Per day | 161,568 |
| Per week | 1,130,976 |
| Per month (30 days) | 4,847,040 |
| Per year | 58,972,320 |
What do people die of?
According to the World Health Organization, most deaths today are caused by non-communicable diseases — conditions that develop over many years rather than being caught from someone else. The leading causes of death worldwide in recent years include:
- Ischaemic heart disease — the single biggest killer, responsible for far more deaths than any other cause.
- Stroke
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Lower respiratory infections, such as pneumonia
- Lung, trachea and bronchus cancers
- Alzheimer's disease and other dementias
- Diabetes and kidney disease
- Diarrhoeal diseases, tuberculosis and neonatal conditions — still major causes in lower-income countries
The pattern is very different between rich and poor countries. In high-income countries most deaths happen after age 70 and are caused by heart disease, cancer and dementia. In low-income countries a much larger share of deaths are of children and young adults, from infections, complications around birth and malnutrition.
Where do the most deaths happen?
The countries with the most deaths each day are mostly the countries with the most people — and, increasingly, the oldest populations. China now records more deaths than births every year, and Japan, Russia, Italy and Germany have been in the same situation for longer.
| # | Country | Deaths per day | Deaths per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🇮🇳 India | 29,229 | 10.7 million |
| 2 | 🇨🇳 China | 28,464 | 10.4 million |
| 3 | 🇺🇸 United States | 8,241 | 3.0 million |
| 4 | 🇷🇺 Russia | 5,517 | 2.0 million |
| 5 | 🇳🇬 Nigeria | 5,462 | 2.0 million |
| 6 | 🇮🇩 Indonesia | 5,136 | 1.9 million |
| 7 | 🇯🇵 Japan | 4,324 | 1.6 million |
| 8 | 🇧🇷 Brazil | 4,269 | 1.6 million |
| 9 | 🇵🇰 Pakistan | 4,098 | 1.5 million |
| 10 | 🇩🇪 Germany | 2,713 | 990,080 |
Why a higher death rate doesn't mean shorter lives
The world's crude death rate is about 7.1 deaths per 1,000 people a year. Surprisingly, many of the healthiest countries have higher death rates than poorer ones: Japan's is 12.8 per 1,000 while Nigeria's is 8.7, even though people in Japan live about 29 years longer. The reason is age: Japan has a very old population, and older people are more likely to die in any given year. That is why demographers use life expectancy — not the death rate — to compare how healthy countries are.
As the whole world ages, the number of deaths each year is rising and is expected to keep rising for decades, even as health keeps improving. Read more in our guide to the aging population.
How the live death counter works
No organisation reports deaths worldwide in real time, so this counter is a statistical estimate. We take the expected number of deaths in a year — based on United Nations population estimates and each country's crude death rate — and spread it evenly over every second of the year. "Today" starts at midnight in your own time zone. Real deaths are not spread evenly (for example, more people die in winter), so treat the figure as a close estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How many people die every day?
About 161,568 people die around the world every day — roughly 6,732 every hour and almost 2 every second.
How many people die each year?
Roughly 59.0 million people die worldwide each year, according to estimates based on United Nations data.
What is the most common cause of death?
According to the World Health Organization, heart disease (ischaemic heart disease) is the single biggest cause of death in the world, followed by stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Which country has the most deaths?
China and India record the most deaths — together about 57,693 a day — simply because they are the two largest countries.
Why do rich countries have higher death rates than poor ones?
Because their populations are older. The crude death rate counts deaths per 1,000 people of all ages, so a country with many elderly people — like Japan — can have a higher death rate than a young country like Nigeria, even though people in Japan live much longer.
How accurate is the live death counter?
It is an estimate, not a live report of real deaths. The counter spreads the expected number of yearly deaths evenly across every second of the year, based on the latest death-rate data.
