Estimate your life expectancy in under a minute. Pick your country, age and a few lifestyle habits — the calculator combines official life expectancy data with findings from large health studies.

How this calculator works
We start with the average life expectancy at birth for your country, then adjust for sex (women live about 5 years longer than men worldwide). If you are already older, we add a "survival bonus": someone who has reached 70 has already avoided the risks of childhood and middle age, so their expected age at death is higher than the national average at birth. Finally, we apply broad adjustments for habits that large studies consistently link to longer or shorter lives:
- Smoking: smokers die around 10 years earlier on average. Quitting recovers most of that, especially before 40.
- Exercise: regular activity — about 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week — is associated with roughly 3 extra years of life.
- Weight: obesity is linked to losing several years of life on average.
- Alcohol: heavy drinking shortens life substantially; light drinking has little measurable effect.
- Diet: diets rich in vegetables, fruit, pulses and whole grains are linked to longer lives.
Life expectancy vs lifespan
Life expectancy is an average, not a limit. In a country with a life expectancy of 75, many people live to 85 or 90 — and a few die young, which pulls the average down. That is also why countries with high child mortality have low life expectancy even though adults there often live into their 70s. You can compare countries in our full guide to life expectancy by country.

Frequently asked questions
How is life expectancy calculated?
Official life expectancy is calculated from death rates at every age in a given year. It tells you how long a newborn would live on average if those death rates stayed the same for their whole life.
What is the average life expectancy in the world?
About 73.3 years. Women live about 5 years longer than men on average worldwide.
Which country has the highest life expectancy?
Among the countries we track, Japan (84.3), Singapore (83.9), Switzerland (83.8) have the highest life expectancy.
Does smoking really shorten life by 10 years?
Studies by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and others have found that smokers die about 10 years earlier than non-smokers on average. Quitting — especially before age 40 — recovers most of that loss.
Is this calculator accurate?
It is a rough, educational estimate — not a medical prediction. It combines your country's average life expectancy with broad effects from large population studies. Your genes, medical history and luck matter a great deal and are not included.
